Three people were killed and 10 injured in a stampede that broke out in Bihar's Begusarai district, ANI reported today.
The stampede broke out at the Simaria Ghat during the Kartik Purnima celebrations.
Thousands of devotees congregated at various river banks of the river Ganga including Haridwar on the occasion of Kartik Purnima, a festival devoted to Lord Vishnu.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for the families of those killed and free treatment for the injured.
Rashtriya Janata Dal chief and former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad wrote on Twitter that the government should have made better arrangements for such a huge gathering of people.
"Am saddened to hear of the death of devotees on the Ganga Ghat on the occasion of Kartik Purnima. The government should have paid attention to arrangements for controlling the crowd."
