Himachal election results: BJP wins 44 seats, Congress wins 21

The ruling Congress was completely wiped out in Mandi district, where nine out of ten seats were won by the BJP with an Independent winning one seat.

The only consolation for the Rahul Gandhi-led Congress was that Himachal Pradesh has a history of changing the ruling formation at its helm every five years.

For the Congress, chief minister Virbhadra Singh won the Arki assembly seat while his son Vikramaditya Singh won from Shimla (Rural).

The BJP which romped to power in Himachal Pradesh by trouncing the Congress saw a jump of about 10 per cent in its vote share as compared to the last Assembly polls in 2012.

The CPI(M) made its presence felt by winning the Theog seat after 24 years. The party had won one seat in 1962, 1972 and 1993, but drew a blank in successive polls.

Counting is finally over in the Himachal elections. 

The BJP wins 44 seats, the Congress 21. 

One seat goes to the CPI(M), and two to independents.

The Chief Election Commission has assured that there can not be any tampering with the EVMs.  

The results of the assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh will be announced at 8 am today.

The two key opponents in the state are chief minister Virbhadra Singh and BJP chief ministerial candidate Prem Kumar Dhumal.

The two opponents have had full confidence in winning over the state. 

While chief minister Virbhadra Singh is sure of "mission repeat" and denies any chance of anti-incumbency factor against his party, Prem Kumar Dhumal assures of wiping out the mafia raj from the state after his victory. 

Most of the exit polls after the election have indicated a victory for BJP. The Congress however has negated the results. 

Since the past 24 years, Himachal Pradesh has had alternative governments between the BJP and the Congress. 

The state underwent single phase assembly elections on November 9. The total number of seats in the state is 68. For winning the elections a party needs to win 35 seats or more. 

The elections were fought by 337 candidates which include 19 women.

The voter turnout in the election this year was recorded to be 74.61 per cent, which is the highest ever turn out for assembly election in Himachal. 

There was a close battle between the BJP and the Congress in the assembly election held in the state in 2012. The Congress won 36 seats while the BJP bagged 26 seats.
