Lok Sabha Election Highlights: PM Modi smells 'conspiracy' behind Odisha CM's poor health

Two people were killed and two were left injured in India's Uttar Pradesh state after being hit by an SUV, which belonged to the convoy of Karan Bhushan Singh, BJP candidate from Kaiserganj Lok Sabha seat, police said. 

Karan is the son of six-time MP and former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who was embroiled in a major controversy as he faced sexual harassment allegations, with some of the nation's top wrestlers protesting against him.

“Tomorrow, on May 30 at 5 PM, campaigning for the last phase of the election will cease in Dumka, Rajmahal and Godda Parliamentary constituencies. More than 29 per cent of voters in these constituencies are below 30," said Jharkhand Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) K Ravi Kumar speaking about the 7th phase of polling. 

He added, "In the Rajmahal constituency, the number of female voters surpasses that of male voters. More than 53 lakh voters will exercise their right to vote in these three constituencies. We have adequately trained the polling parties to improve the speed of voting. All basic facilities have also been arranged at all booths. We hope for a peaceful voting."

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi said in a public meeting in Sundernagar, Himachal Pradesh that PM Modi always shy away from talking about key issues of the state, including "natural disaster, unemployment, pension." "During election campaigning, big leaders of BJP, even PM Modi, whose post is most reputable in our democratic nation, never talk about Himachal Pradesh natural disaster, unemployment, pension. He only seeks votes on the basis of religion," Gandhi said.

There has been an increase of 104 per cent in the number of political parties contesting the Lok Sabha elections from 2009 to 2024, according to an analysis by poll rights body ADR.

According to the analysis, 751 political parties are participating in 2024 as compared to 677 who took part in 2019, 464 in 2014, and 368 in 2009. This surge represents a staggering 104 per cent increase from 2009 to 2024.

Exuding confidence in BJP's win in the Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency, the party leader Tejasvi Surya said that there is a huge wave in favour of Prime Minister Narendra Modi across the country.

"There is a huge wave in favour of PM Modi across the country. Varanasi is one of the oldest cities in the world. It is also the Lok Sabha constituency of Narendra Modi. There is a lot of enthusiasm among the people. We are all waiting for June 1," Surya told ANI.

Former Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader CN Ashwath Narayan has demanded action against Karnataka Minister B. Nagendra and CM Siddaramaiah in connection with the alleged suicide case of Maharshi Valmiki corporation employee Chandrasekaran.

Chandrasekaran allegedly wrote a six-page suicide note before dying by suicide on Sunday evening. He also mentioned the names of three officials in the death note and revealed the secret of multi-crore corruption. A case has been registered in this regard at Vinobanagar police station.

Hitting out at the Congress-led state government in Karnataka, Narayan said, "For the first time in the history of India, a responsible government officer in his suicide note has mentioned the main reason and people responsible, clearly. How the scam has happened, how it has been misused, and how the money of the government has been withdrawn straightaway."

The BJP leader said that an FIR should be filed against the CM and Nagendra and they should be arrested.

"In the FIR, the name of the ministers or the Chief Minister is not mentioned but it has been mentioned in the suicide note that it happened because of them. To bring out the truth he has to give his life. This irresponsible and shameless Congress government is not even taking action or responding. All these things have happened probably the CM himself is accountable. Mr. Nagendra is completely accountable. In his death note, he has mentioned. Technically it will come to the CM also. So immediately FIR should be filed and they should be arrested," he said.

A PIL has been filed in the Delhi High Court, demanding action against Sunita Kejriwal, wife of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, and several others for allegedly recording trial court proceedings during the Chief Minister's address following his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

The recordings were purportedly shared on social media.

Filed by Delhi-based lawyer Vaibhav Singh, the PIL requests the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate and register an FIR against those involved in the alleged recording and dissemination of the court proceedings.

The plea argues that these actions put the trial court judge's life at risk. 

"Several members of the Aam Aadmi Party, along with other opposition party members, intentionally and deliberately recorded audio and video of the court proceedings with the willful intention to malign and manipulate the court proceedings," states the plea.

Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Delhi BJP Chief Virendra Sachdeva criticised the Delhi government's failure to address the water crisis in the capital city of Delhi.
Sachdeva remarked, "Delhi is currently witnessing a severe heatwave, resulting in a water crisis. It was very evident since April that Delhi would face prolonged extreme heat. I question why the Delhi government did not implement a 'Summer Action Plan' and failed to prepare for this crisis."

"Usually the meeting for the 'Summer Action Plan' is held by the end of March. But throughout April and May, the ruling party of Delhi was involved only in politics. They just have wasted the time of residents of Delhi through their corruption, arrests and bail. The Cabinet Ministers of Delhi focused solely on their party's interests rather than the people's needs," said Sachdeva.

He further added, "They often blame Haryana for water, so I want to ask why don't they source water from their ruling state Punjab or their coalition state, Himachal Pradesh? They can't even give a single line answer to the question of what efforts they made to meet the water demands of Delhi."

Criticising the AAP government, he said, "It is your responsibility to regulate water levels and control water tanker operations. Ensuring the supply of pure and sufficient water to Delhi is essential. But they have only made empty promises to the residents of Delhi."

Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar stoked yet another controversy when he referred to Chinese invasion of sovereign Indian lands of 1962 as "alleged Chinese invasion". In a video of an event at the Foreign Correspondents Club on Tuesday (May 28), Aiyar can be heard as saying that "...in October 1962, the Chinese allegedly invaded India."
