
It will be the end of an era for Marco Reus at Borussia Dortmund as he bids farewell to the club after the 2023-24 season. The announcement was made official on Friday (May 3)withReus set to depart after a potential Champions Leaguefinal,if Dortmund beat Paris Saint-Germain in the semifinal. Having signed from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2012, Reus served the club for 12yearsduring which he led the club to several heightsincludingwinning domestic honours.
"Iam incredibly grateful and proud for thisspecialtime at my club Borussia Dortmund. I spent more than half of my life in this club and enjoyed every day, althoughofcoursethere were also difficult moments.
“Ialready know that it will be difficult for me to say goodbye at the end of the season. And yetI'mgladthatthere'sclarity nowandwe can concentrate fully on theimportantfinal games that are still outstanding.
“We have a big goal in mindandwe allwant to achieve it together. Forthiswe need each and every one of our incredible fans, whom I would liketo expressly thank for their incredible support over the years,”said Reus in a video released on theclub’swebsite.
Reus started his youth career with Dortmund before moving to Rot Weiss Ahlen in 2006. He would spend three years with the side before moving to Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2009.It was at Mönchengladbach wherehe would get his Bundesliga debut and hit the ground running with eight goals.

Despite impressing in the 2009-10 season, Reuswas unable toearn a call-up to the Germany national side for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.However, it was in 2011 that he was handed his debut by then-Germany manager Joachim Low.He would feature for the side in the Euro 2012 and FIFA World Cup 2018havingmissedGermany’s2014 World Cup winning campaign with a groin issue. Hewas also injuredduring the Euro 2016 in France.
During his time at DortmundReuswon DFB Pokal on two occasions in 2017 and 2021 and finished runners-up in the Bundesliga on multiple occasionsincludingthe 2022-23seasonwhere his side lost the title on the final day despite having the lead heading into the final day.He also lost the 2013 Champions League finalwith Dortmund but couldmakeamend this year as Dortmund are a draw away from the final inLondon’sWembley Stadium.
