Liverpool chairman Tom Werner makes controversial comment, wants Premier League matches to be staged in US

Making a controversial statement on Friday (June 7), Liverpool owner Tom Werner said he wants Premier League matches to be staged in New York. While there are no such plans in process, this adds to the initiative taken by the Spanish and Italian FA, who conduct Super Cup matches abroad in the Middle East. Currentlythere is no counter reaction to the comment yet from the Premier League, it remains an interesting call to have England’s domestic matches played abroad.

"I'm determined one day to have a Premier League game be played in New York City," Werner told the Financial Times.

"I even have the sort of crazy idea that there would be a day where we play one game in Tokyo, one game a few hours later in Los Angeles, one game a few hours later in Rio, one game a few hours later in Riyadh and make it sort of a day where football, where the Premier League, is celebrated,' he further said.

Currently, it is the US sports market that has caught the attention of the European market with NFL and WWE already hosting events in England and other countries. NFL holds at least two matches in England’s Wembley Stadium while they also have an agreement with Tottenham Hotspur which holds another two matches in their stadium.

While the Premier League in near future is nowhere closer to even having a discussion, it will be interesting to see if such a proposal is put forward. Currently, Spanish Super Cup is held in Saudi Arabia with four teams participating while Italian Super Cup is also held in the Middle East in January.

For now, Werner’s focus will be on the Liverpool side which will have a decisive summer with new manager Arne Slot in charge. The Dutch gaffer was announced as the successor for Jurgen Klopp in May and will look to fill the big void left by him. Werner and Co will have to monitor his performance before giving him full control of the club.
