Euro 2024: 'He's stepped up...,' Jude Bellingham credits assistant England coach's advice for win in QF

England striker Jude Bellingham said that it was the advice from assistant England coach Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink which helped him and his team against Switzerland in Euro 2024. England beat Switzerland 5-3 on penalties after the game stood at 1-1 post extra time and entered the semis on Saturday (Jul 6).

"I was really confident in my preparation, confident in the things I talked through with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, he's stepped up for us massively," revealed Bellingham on a chat with BBC Radio 5Live.

Bellingham took one of the five penalties England scored, breaking the seven-loss penalty shootout jinx during the knockout stage. It is to be noted that England lost last Euro final on penalties to Italy. They had also exited tournaments (FIFA World Cup/ Euro Cup) after losing on penalties in 1990, 1996, 1998, 2004, 2006 and 2012.

"It's the work that he does behind closed doors, with the lads being willing to take on that information, that put us in those situations in order to be able to win," the 21-year-old added.

Bellingham also credited the goalkeepers in the Three Lions squad for offering much needed penalty practise.

"So this is a massive team effort. Another thing is [goalkeepers] Dean Henderson, Aaron Ramsdale, Tom Heaton, who have been with us this camp, they've been huge in helping us practise the penalties.

"Again, they won't get the credit they deserve but essentially, if they don't put in the right effort, you don't have the right practice to go out and execute. So many people are involved in this win. It's a massive team win," added Bellingham.

The Real Madrid star is to be credited for England's journey this far in the tournament. It was his bicycle kick in the last minute of stoppage time against Slovakia which sent the game in extra time and England eventually emerged as winners.
