The Bharatiya Janata Party today broke the alliance with Mehbooba Mufti-led Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The move has paralysed the state government making the Governor's rule imminent in case other parties don't extend support to the PDP.
BJP's general secretary Ram Madhav described "terrorism, violence and radicalisation" as the top reasons for the pullout.
"Terrorism, violence and radicalisation have risen and fundamental rights of the citizens are under danger in the Valley. Shujaat Bukhari's killing is an example," he noted.
"This alliance was anti-national & unnatural. Our party chief had said, this alliance won't work out. Had they continued with it they would have had to answer in 2019 Lok Sabha election," stated Shiv Sena's Sanjay Raut.
Here's taking a quick look at what prompted the BJP to call off the alliance:
1. The BJP maintained that the PDP never responded to the assistance and funds granted by the centre.
2. The worsening state of law and order in the Valley is seen as another reason. According to reports, the Centre called for a ceasefire in the state during the month of Ramzan, a move pressed for by CM Mufti, terror activities increased during the period with the killing of senior journalist Shujaat Bukhari and the abduction and murder of Rifleman Aurangzeb as some of the key incidents to prove the same.
3. The BJP also stated increasing radicalisation and lack of development in the state as some of the key reasons for dissatisfaction with the alliance.
4. The Mufti government could not ensure freedom of speech in the state, Madhav stated.
5. Ram Madhav also mentioned the increasing ideological differences between the two parties.
What's next?
Jammu and Kashmir now heads for more than a couple of possibilities in days to come. CM Mehbooba Mufti has served her resignation and called for an emergency meeting at 4pm today after which she briefed the media stating that the BJP has betrayed the alliance by pulling out.
Meanwhile, the Congress has clearly ruled out any possibility of an alliance with the PDP.
"Whatever has happened is good. People of J&K will get some relief. They (BJP) ruined Kashmir & have now pulled out, maximum number of civilian and army men died during these 3 years. That question does not arise (on forming alliance with PDP)," Senior Congress leader, Ghulam Nabi Azad noted.
Jammu and Kashmir National Conference's Omar Abdullah announced that he won't back the PDP. According to reports, he met Governor NN Vohra in Srinagar earlier today.
The numbers
The PDP (with 28 seats) can form an alliance with Abdulla's National Conference (which enjoys 15 seats). Out of a total of 87 assembly seats in the state, a minimum of 45 is required to form the government. The BJP has a total of 25 lawmakers in the state and the Congress, 12.
