Tate Taylor replaces Matthew Newton as director of Jessica Chastain's 'Eve'

Director Tate Taylor has now stepped in to save Jessica Chastain’s next project 'Eve' after original director Matthew Newton had to leave because of his resurfaced case of assault. Voltage Pictures’ 'Eve' is being produced by Jessica Chastain under her Freckle Films label with Voltage financing. 

Matthew Newton received backlash for being on the project after it appeared that he is pleading guilty to assaulting his girlfriend 11 years ago in his home country of Australia. Had he continued with the project, 'Eve' would have led to a reunion between Jessica and her 'Help' director. 

What added to Jessica’s worry and negative publicity all the more was because she is a Time’s Up champion. She came under fire on social media when news of Matthew directing the film came out. 

Post all this, Matthew gave a statement: “I am profoundly aware that I have a responsibility to lead where I have failed in the past. I can never undo the harm that I’ve caused the people I’ve cared about and I carry that shame and responsibility with me every day. Over the past eight years, I have been working extensively with healthcare professionals to help me overcome my addiction and mental health illness. For the past six years I have lived a quiet and sober life. All I can do now is try to be a living amends and hopefully contribute to the positive change occurring in our industry.”
