Rust armourer Hannah Gutierrez Reed has agreed to plead guilty to bringing a live gun into a bar in Santa Fe. She will be sentenced to 18 months of probation with regard to the case.
Hannah is already serving an 18-month prison sentence for involuntary manslaughter in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the sets of Rust. Halyna was killed on the set as the gun fired live rounds.
Her pleading guilty in the other case does not change anything for the ongoing case and she will have to complete prison time. She could have however been slapped with 18 more months of prison for bringing the gun to a bar but will now instead serve supervised probation from her home in Arizona.
Hannah Gutierrez Reed was convicted by a Santa Fe jury in March of negligently loading a live bullet into actor Alec Baldwin’s gun. The gun ultimately killed Halyna Hutchins, causing a massive uproar in the Hollywood film circuit with a whole debate over the safety precautions that were flouted on the sets of Rust.
Alec was also tried for the same case but it was dismissed during his trial in July, after a judge found that prosecutors had withheld evidence from the defense.
Gutierrez Reed’s lawyers are seeking to have her manslaughter conviction thrown out on similar grounds. Her defense argue that the charge was an attempt to pressure her into pleading guilty in the manslaughter case, and into accepting responsibility for bringing live bullets onto the set, which she has denied doing.
A separate hearing is set for September 26 on Gutierrez Reed’s motion for a new trial in the manslaughter case.
