This year political activist Shaun King and Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley were honoured, while Pharrell Williams was tapped as the night's entertainment.

Fresh off her Savage X fashion show, Rihanna hosted her 5th annual Diamond Ball to benefit the Clara Lionel Foundation (CLF) in New York on Thursday (September 12).

The singer founded the organization in honour of her grandparents in 2012. According to a press release: "CLF supports and funds groundbreaking and effective education and emergency response programs around the world." Currently the organization is helping with relief efforts in the Bahamas following hurricane Dorian.

Rihanna credited her charitable spirit to the women in her family.

"It's all I've known and it's not anything that had to come up with, or create for my personality. It's just what I was birthed from, what I've grown and raised and moulded by."
