Rani Mukerji to next star in YRF's sequel to hit film 'Mardaani'

Rani Mukerji has been off the scene for quite some time now. After delivering a successful film in ‘Hichki’ that not only ticked all the checkboxes at the box office but also earned her rave reviews.

Now, Rani will be seen in the sequel to a previous hit film ‘Mardaani’ in which she starred in 2015. The film was her comeback to the Hindi film industry after getting married to producer Aditya Chopra. In the film, she played the role of a senior inspector, crime branch, Shivani Shivaji Roy. She took the case of child trafficking racket and had a tough fight with leading villain Tahir Raj Bhasin.

In the sequel titled ‘Mardaani 2’, she will reprise her role as the daredevil inspector.

In a statement published today, the makers Yash Raj Films issued a statement: “Over the years YRF has excelled in discovering talented directors, and Mardaani 2 will see the company launch, Gopi Puthran, who incidentally was the writer of the first film. Produced by Aditya Chopra, this will be Rani’s next release after the worldwide blockbuster Hichki that was hugely acclaimed by audiences and critics alike and marked her return to acting post-pregnancy.”

The statement also carried Rani’s response to the news that read: “Mardaani is and will always be extremely close to my heart. Right since its release, everyone has asked me time and again when I would be doing Mardaani 2 and I’m sure this announcement will come as a pleasant surprise to them all. Gopi has written an extraordinary script that we all love and I can’t wait to start shooting this film soon.”

She also added that the leading villain of the film will be the upgraded version of Tahir's character from ‘Mardaani’ : “Shivani will face a cold, merciless villain who has no empathy, no fear of God and is pure evil. The character has been written superbly and I’m excited to find out who the actor will be.”

‘Mardaani 2’ is all set to go on floors from next year and will release in the second half of 2019.
