Noted actress Shaukat Azmi, mother of Shabana Azmi, passes away

Prolific theatre and film actress Shaukat Azmi is no more. The actress breathed her last at her residence in Juhu on Friday evening. According to reports, the actress had been ailing for the last few years and was even admitted recently to hospital. The family had shifted her back home on Friday morning. She was 91.
Married to prolific writer and activist Kaifi Azmi, the veteran actress is the mother of well-known actress Shabana Azmi and cinematographer BabaAzmi.
Born to into a Muslim family of Hyderabad State, she got married to Kaifi Azmi at an young age and learnt theatre under Prithviraj Kapoor and worked on plays with him. She was also one of the senior members of Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA) - an organisation where her husband closely worked.
While she has done several small roles in various Hindi films, she is best remembered for her roles in films like 'Garam Hawa', 'Umrao Jaan' and 'Salaam Bombay'.
She later wrote an autobiography titled 'Kaifi and I' which was later adapted into a play 'Kaifi Aur Main' by the couple's daughter, Shabana Azmi.
According to reports, the funeral is likely to take place on Saturday.
