Pride Month 2024
Pride Month, which is observed from June 1st to June 30th June, is the worldwide celebration of LGBTQ+ culture and rights. It kicked off on Saturday with several events organised across the globe. It is a time of celebration with vibrant parades and commemorate the hard-fought battles for equality, recognition, and acceptance.
History of Pride Month
The month-long celebration was first observed with Gay Pride Week in late June 1970, a public celebration that marked the first anniversary of the violent police raid at New York’s Stonewall Inn, a gay bar. In 1999, President Bill Clinton proclaimed June as Gay and Lesbian Pride Month.
The Iconic Rainbow Flag
The rainbow flag that we see everywhere this month was designed by artist Gilbert Baker and unveiled on June 25, 1978, during the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade. Each colour was carefully selected to convey an important message.

Pride Month In India
India observed its first Pride Parade in Kolkata on July 2, 1999, according to Wikipedia. Since then, Pride marches have been conducted in over 21 cities across the country.
Purpose of Pride Month
Pride Month is not just about celebration and parades, it also provides an opportunity for education and awareness. Workshops, panel discussions, and exhibitions highlight LGBTQ+ history, culture, and issues. It encourages individuals and organisations to reflect on their roles in supporting LGBTQ+ rights and to take actionable steps towards inclusivity.
