King Charles attends Trooping the Colour amid cancer treatment; see first pics

King Charles, 75, made a grand entrance as he attended the annual Trooping the Colour ceremony on June 15 in London, celebrating his official birthday for the second time as monarch. The event, featuring a grand military procession and a Royal Air Force flypast, has been a staple in British tradition for over 260 years.

On May 30, it was announced that King Charles would participate in this year's event with a slight modification due to his ongoing cancer treatment. Instead of the traditional horseback ride, he joined the procession in a horse-drawn carriage accompanied by Queen Camilla.

For the occasion, King Charles donned the Guard of Honour Order's tunic made of bearskin, adorned with a blue garter sash, symbolising the regiment being honoured. His attire also included his mother Queen Elizabeth's cypher and decorations from the Noble Order military and knight garters.

Additionally, he wore several medals, including the 1953 Coronation medal of Queen Elizabeth and her various jubilee medals, from silver to platinum, marking key milestones throughout her reign.

Queen Camilla complemented the king's attire with a pale green silk crepe dress and coat by Anna Valentine, paired with a hat by royal designer Philip Treacy. As the Colonel-in-Chief of the Grenadier Guards, she accessorised with the regiment's military brooch.

This shift to a carriage ride mirrors the tradition set by Queen Elizabeth, who transitioned from horseback to a coach at the age of 60. The late queen, who passed away in September 2022, last rode horseback at Trooping the Colour in 1986 on her cherished horse, Burmese.

Last year, King Charles was joined on horseback by Prince William, Prince Edward, and Princess Anne, with other royal family members following in carriages. This year, members of the royal family again accompanied the king, including Kate Middleton, in her first public appearance since her cancer diagnosis in March.
