Legendary actress Ruma Guha Thakurta, first wife of Kishore Kumar, passes away

Veteran Bengali actress Ruma Guha Thakurta is no more. The legendary actress breathed her last on Monday morning at her Ballygunge Place residence in Kolkata. She was 84. She was suffering from age-related diseases over the past few years.

Born in Kolkata in 1934, Thakurta appeared in several prominent films like ‘Antony Firingi’, ‘Ganga Obhijaan’, ‘Palatak’, 'Aashite Aasio Na', 'Balika Bodhu'. She also featured in Satyajit Ray's 'Abhijaan' and 'Ganoshotru'.

She was singer-actor Kishore Kumar's first wife. The couple married in 1951 but divorced 6 years later. Singer Amit Kumar is her son. Later in 1960, she married Arup Guha Thakurta.

Not just acting, she was also a talented singer and was instrumental in setting up music group Calcutta Youth Choir in 1958 along with Salil Chowdhury and Satyajit Ray. She was a student of singer Debabrata Biswas and apart from her films, Guhathakurta will also be remembered for her contribution to Bengali music.

She was last seen playing a small part in Mira Nair's 2006 film 'Namesake'.
