Who's winning at box office? Record $155 million opening for Barbie, Oppenheimer collects $80 million

Barbenheimer has bore fruit! The clash has worked for both the films and the industry as a whole as Barbie and Oppenheimer have worked their charm at the box office.

Over the weekend, moviegoers watched Greta Gerwig’s fantasy comedy,Barbie in huge numbers. The film hit it out of the park as the biggest opening of the year – $155 million. WhileBarbie performed remarkably, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer wasn’t far behind as it collected $80.5 million in its opening weekend.

Audiences couldn't decide between Barbie and Oppenheimer

Many movie watchers couldn’t choose between the two films so they opted for both Barbie and Oppenheimer, turning the box office battle into a double feature. Variety reported that David A Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research said, “This is an unequivocally great weekend for moviegoing. Barbie and Oppenheimer are complementing each other at the box office, not taking the audience from each other.”

Barbie worked its pink magic at the box office

While both films are working their magic at the box office,Barbie emerged as theclear winner. Thanks to its inescapable marketing campaigns, stunning ensemble cast, and the crazy hype around the doll film, the film registered a global tally of $337 million.

Among other records, Barbie also scored the biggest opening weekend ever for a film directed by a woman. Captain Marvel, which was co-directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, previously held the title with $153 million in 2019. Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman was a record-holder for a movie solely directed by a woman with $103 million in 2017.

Barbie stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling star as the stereotypical versions of Barbie and Ken, who leave behind the Dreamhouse on a quest for self-discovery in the real world. The cast also includes Issa Rae, Dua Lipa, Simu Liu, Michael Cera, Helen Mirren, John Cena, and Will Ferrell. The film is directed by Greta Gerwig with a script she co-wrote with her husband Noam.

Barbie is a star but Oppenheimer is doing equally good

While it’s pink for Barbie, Oppenheimer isn’t a letdown by any standards. The three-hour-long film has managed a record of its own as the film, which most would label as bland and dry, has managed to stand tallto its colourful competitor. Oppenheimer has little action and only talks and yet has managed to get the box office collections that it has.

Adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus, Oppenheimer is about theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. Cillian Murphy plays the man who led the action at Los Alamos, alongside an ensemble of Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, and Alden Ehrenreich.
