Kate Winslet takes her war film Lee to Munich Film Festival: Hard to make films about women, as a woman

Kate Winslet was feted at the Munich International Film Festival where her film Lee saw its European premiere. Kate has produced and also acted in the film about war photographer Lee Miller.
On the stage to accept the Festival’s CineMerit award, Kate revealed that the release of her film Lee has been put back and explained, “We chose to delay the release of Lee because of the strike and because I wanted to be able to talk about the real true labour of love that it was for me and my producing partner Kate Solomon to make this film.”
Kate Winslet admits telling stories of women is difficult
On not having it easy even after being in the industry for so long as a woman, Kate said, “It’s hard to make films as a woman and it is hard to make films about women. I hope with this film people will be more open-eared and more open-eyed to wanting to absorb stories of phenomenally important historical figures like the formidable Lee Miller.”
Lee Miller was a model-turned-photographer-turned-war-correspondent. She became famous as she took a series of iconic and harrowing pictures during World War II. Amongst many pictures, one that stood out was Miller in a bathtub in Hitler’s abandoned residence in the German city.
The film portrays the worst horrors of World War II, as captured by Miller and her friend and fellow photographer David E. Scherman, played by Andy Samberg.
Kate Winslet got cheers from the audience
At the Munich Film Festival, Kate saw a thunderous response by the attendees. Before inviting her to the stage, her co-star in The Reader, David Kross, paid tribute to the actress. He said she had effectively been his intimacy coordinator on the 2008 film, before that role existed: “I’m still very thankful for the way you made me feel at ease when working on those very intimate scenes, you created a safe space and helped me understand the process, patiently, empathetically, and most of all with a lot of humour.”
