House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 5 Review:When tactics, patience and intelligent warfare get replaced with hormones, vengeance and rage-filled myopic decisions, what you get is the summation of House of the Dragon season 2 episode 5, “The Regent”. Driven by imprudence, the Greens led by Aemond Targaryen and Ser Criston Cole rock their own boat as they find victory in slaying Meleys and its dragon rider Princess Rhaenys in the last episode.
As they return “victorious” to King’s Landing with the head of the massive dragon, proudly showing their loot to the common people, there is nothing but nervous chatter amongst people who consider dragons God-like and displaying slain dragons as a bad omen. Also, we have a near-dead King now with Aegon Targaryen going down with his dragon Sunfyre in the battle of two dragons against one.
All that's changed in House of the Dragon S2 Ep 5
The new House of the Dragon episode takes account of all things happening in Westeros. While the most changes take place in King’s Landing with Aegon II effectively taking to bed with severe burn injuries (inflicted in the previous episode, more by his brother Aemond than by Rhaenys), there is also lots happening in Harrenhal, the place where Prince Daemon has perched himself and is drawing up an army.House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 4 Review: Watch out for epic dragon battle in the best episode so far
Aemond Targaryen now rules in Aegon II’s stead even though Queen Dowager Alicent disapproves. He has now fortified the walls of the King’s Landing and stopped all people from entering or leaving the city.
Meanwhile, Daemon Targaryen wants people to now call him King. He wants to raise an army in his name and plans to offer Queen Rhaenyra a place beside him as his Queen. He continues to have nightmares – from seeing his dead mother, who calls him his favourite son, to hearing the wailing of women. He is warned time and again of being a hasty decision maker but he doesn’t listen to his gut, like all times previously.
Dragonstone is pretty much a bore if you ask me. Queen Rhaenyra shows restraint, much unlike her half-brothers but a tad too much in times when dragons are already fighting wars for their humans. She is shown fighting her way in the small council, who profess their shaken belief on being led by a woman. She appears lost and confused in most parts and lacks the steadfastness of a dragon rider ruler.
It’s almost ironic since Rhaenyra and Alicent, best friends of yore, seem to suffer the same fate – of being surrounded by men who mistrust their talent and power.
Also, we miss Otto Hightower and his ways because Ser Criston Cole as Hand of the King (now Aemond’s) is purely stupid and silly. He lacks the experience and depth and it shows in his quick-to-jump-the-gun decisions.
