Actor Shekhar Suman, who was recently seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, joined the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the party headquarters in Delhi on Tuesday (May 7).

Along with Suman, former Congress National Media Coordinator, Radhika Khera too joined the party.

While addressing the press, Shekhar Suman stated that he was waiting for Heeramandi to become a hit before joining BJP."Log kahi ye na kahe ki mere paas karne ko kuch nahi tha, isliye politics join ki(I didn't want people to say that I joined politics because I had now work). Heeramandi has now become a global hit," said the comedian-actor.

He said that it was probably god's wish that he join politics. "Till yesterday I did not know that I would be sitting here today because many things in life happen knowingly or unknowingly. I have come here with a very positive thinking and I would like to thank God that he ordered me to come here..." added Suman.

Suman made a comeback of sorts with the Netflix web series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. The show premiered on the OTT platform on May 1. Suman plays the role of Zulfiqar Ahmed in Heeramandi and was paired opposite Manisha Koirala.

Reflecting on the learningsand the unexpected opportunity, Shekhar expressedgratitude for the chance to work with Bhansali.

In an earlier interview with ANI, Suman had said, "As an artist, you desire to work with a well-known director. I got a chance to work with him, but on every step, on every path, a person learns something. But when he comes with a good filmmaker, he climbs many steps. So I feel that when I started this work in Heeramandi, me it was enough for me to do even one scene. Because to be seen in this environment and to do something is a big thing in itself. But there is also a connection to it. This opportunity came to me that time when I was not expecting it."

The show also starred his son Adhyayan Suman.

Suman joins a list of celebrities who have joined the BJP in recent weeks amid the Lok Sabha 2024 polls. Just last week, TV star Rupali Ganguly joined the party. Arun Govil and Kangana Ranaut are also contesting on BJP tickets this year.
