Director Kiran Rao never shies from talking about her personal life or putting her views forward. Recently, while talking about motherhood, Rao revealed that she had suffered a ''lot of miscarriages'' before the birth of her son Azad.

Rao, who was previously married to actor Aamir Khan welcomed her first child Azad in December 2011 through surrogacy.

Speaking on Zoom, the filmmaker was asked whether she has ever regretted the pause she took in her career while she was busy raising her son.

Answering this, Kiran went on to reveal the multiple miscarriages she had gone through before opting surrogacy

“The year that Dhobi Ghat was made was the year that Azad was born. And I had tried very hard to have a child. For five years, I had had a lot of miscarriages, a lot of personal, physical health issues. I was just finding it very hard to have a child. I was really keen to have a child, so when Azad was born it was… I didn’t have to make a decision. Obviously, all I wanted to do was raise my baby,” she said.

Speaking further, the director said that she's enjoyed raising Azad, as she went on to call it some of the best years of her life and had no regrets for the break she took from her career.

“I enjoyed having Azad so much. Those were some of the best years of my life. I’ll never regret not having made a film in 10 years. I have no regrets because I enjoyed it thoroughly,” she said.

Filmmaker and director Kiran Rao and actor Aamir Khan got divorced in 2021, ending their 15-year-long marriage. Despite parting ways, the former couple continue to co-parent their son Azad.
