Jigra director Vasan Bala takes responsibility for movie's failure at the box office

Alia Bhatt's latest film Jigra has not faired well at the box office. The film is being considered as the actor's lowest opening at the box office till date. The film's director Vasan Bala has taken responsibility for its underperformance.
In a recent interview, Vasan acknowledged that Alia is one of the most sought-after actors in the industry and with everyone vying to sign her for their projects, she chose to act and co-produce Jigra.
In a conversation with Fever FM, Vasan admitted that something about the film didn’t connect with the audience, which led to its disappointing performance. He said, “So it is my responsibility to deliver box office because we are in the business of filmmaking also. So which is why I need to analyze. Kuch toh hua hai na (Something has happened, right)? Something has happened where people have stayed away, something that they have not bought, something that they didn’t feel the need to come to the theatre. If at all any other actor decides to give their time, his or her, then you know, make it worth it.”
Earlier while speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Vasan Bala said he had let both Alia Bhatt and producer Karan Johar down.
"I do feel it. I feel it majorly. I mean, they (Karan Johar and Alia) are supremely supportive, and there is no ounce of letting me feel like this. It is something that I have to grapple with."
Karan and Alia produced Jigra together. The film collected Rs 27.2 crore (Rs 200 million approx) within 10 days of its release. Jigra also starred Vedang Raina and Manoj Pahwa.

In her review, WION's Kriti Tulsiani wrote, "Coupling a sibling story with a prison break format, whatJigragets right is the emotional quotient of the film. But it's the other part that doesn't quite work. Prison escape movies aren't new to cinema and same for its tropes, which is why it's important for the ride to the climax be worthwhile. While the film puts on an earnest attempt, it does lose momentum and pace in a few scenes in the second half. " Read full review here
