Packed with so much fun and laughter while tugging at important points about a woman’s agency in rural parts of India, Laapata Ladies is back in news as it’s been selected to represent India at Oscars 2025. India will be sending Kiran Rao's directorial to the Oscars in the Best International Feature Film category.
Laapata Ladies is a story about two women who get married, board a local train with their respective husbands and get swapped on their journey to their new marital homes because of their faces being hidden under a veil.
Is the film based on a real life story?
The film is not based on a true story but takes inspiration from a real-life event. Kiran Rao’s ex-husband, Aamir Khan, returned from a screenwriting competition he was judging and declared “a one-liner,” which gave way to the plot of a full-feature film.
In an interview, Kiran Rao recounted, “Aamir came home and told me a one-liner, about two girls on a train and how they get swapped. And I was hooked. I knew that this was not just a great story but also a great opportunity for me.”
