Barzakh review: Fawad Khan and Sanam Saeed's show is about mystical forever love

Asim Abbasi’s Barzakh is not for those looking for an easy watch because it is anything but that. It’s profound, serious and will possibly take one or two watches to get to the true meaning of the short series that promises to challenge the notion of everlasting forever kind of love.

The show takes place in the mountainous region of Pakistan which is described as the Land of Nowhere (literally) as 76-year-old Jafar Khanzada (played by Salman Shahid)decides to get married for the third and last time to the love of his life, a woman who has been dead for years.

It gets interesting as JK calls his children to his palatial house to witness the once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon. His estranged children are played by Shehryar (Fawad Khan) and Saifullah (Fawad M Khan). JK’s mansion is taken care of by Scheherazade (Sanam Saeed). We’re not sure who she is in the scheme of things.

Love in a Land of Nowhere

Jafaris shown as a man who loves his luxuries, his money, has ambitions and likes to believe he can do it all on his own even though he deals with late-stage dementia.

The whole story is built with supernatural elements as is the Land of Nowhere. The nearby villagers are shown hating JK and his palace as they claim that it’s built on the foundation of their ancestors' graves.

Barzakh is beautiful as a concept and it takes meaning from its name – the veil between the two worlds - the living and the dead. We can see glimpses of women and men carrying some heavy stones on their backs. They look like they are dead but the show never over explains. It never gets into breaking down the scenes or explaining the chemistry between the characters or why they are behaving like they are.

The show is wrapped beautifully with each actor giving in their best. None of the actors demystifies the aura of the story and yet deliver solid performances. Also, it looks beautiful to watch – the snow-capped mountains, the large vast greenlands and the sun shining bright at that altitude.

Fawad Khan and Sanam Saeed get back together after years and the duo may remind you of their Zindagi Gulzar Hai days, even though they are notromantically involved in this one. Fawad Khan looks as gorgeous as before and Sanam is equally stunning.
