All We Imagine As Light cast and director at Cannes 2024
It was a celebration like no other. As Payal Kapadia's film All We Imagine As Light premiered at the Grand Theatre at Cannes on Thursday evening, its lead cast danced on the red carpet much to the delight of the camera persons. And they had reasons to celebrate. While the winner of the Palme d'Or award- the highest honour at the Cannes Film Festival- will be announced only on May 25, Kapadia's film is the first Indian movie to have been selected in the competition section at Cannes in 30 years.
The film's lead cast- Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam and Hridhu Haroo- dressed in glamorous attires danced on the red carpet before entering the theatre for their premiere. The choice of song was naturally a Bollywood hit- Kala Chashma- as the four actors along with director Payal Kapadia danced and made their way inside.
Kapadia is not new to Cannes and laurels. Three years ago, she won the 'le prix du documentaire' for Best Documentary for A Night of Knowing Nothing. All We Imagine As Lightis her first feature film.
The cast and crew of All We Imagine As Light were all smiles on the red carpet. From striking different poses to dancing on the red carpet, they attracted a lot of attention.
The synopsis of All We Imagine As Lightreads, "In Mumbai, Nurse Prabha's daily routine is disrupted when she receives an unexpected gift from her estranged husband. Meanwhile, her younger roommate, Anu, struggles to find a private place in the city to be intimate with her boyfriend. A getaway to a beach town provides them with the opportunity to fulfill their desires in a secluded setting."
Back in 1994, the Malayalam film Swahamcompeted for the Palme d'Or.
The film received thunderous applause post-screening as an emotional Kapadia thanked her cast, crew and producers for their work. Many international publications, who were present at the screening of All We Imagine As Light, gave the film rave reviews. While Variety called it a 'glowing portrait of urban connection', The Guardian called it a 'dreamlike and gentle modern Mumbai tale'.
