PAK vs BAN: Bangladesh inflict embarrassing whitewash on hosts Pakistan in Rawalpindi; pocket series 2-0

Bangladesh inflicted an embarrassing whitewash on hosts Pakistan in the two-match Test series with a six-wicket win in Rawalpindi on Tuesday (Sep 3). Having already won the first Test by 10 wickets, Bangladesh won the second Test to register a historic series win. This is Bangladesh’s third series win on foreign soil, having beaten West Indies in 2009 and then Zimbabwe in 2021. For Pakistan, this remains the lowest point in their Test cricket history with the 2-0 defeat against Bangladesh.

With just a draw required to win the series, Bangladesh went one step better as they won the match by six wickets. Having been struggling at26/6 at one stage in the first innings, Bangladesh did well to get back into the match as they only trailed by 12 runs. Pakistan, however, were brought down to their knees in the second innings and were bowled out for 172 runs, setting a 185-run target for the visitors to win.

The target was chased with ease as all batters contributed to help their side to a historic win on Pakistan soil. Zakir Hasan (40), Najmul Hossain Shanto (38), and Mominul Haque (34) were the pick of the batters for Bangladesh. Earlier, Liton Das (138) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (78) built a 175-run stand in the first innings to help their side come back into the contest.

The series defeat means Pakistan have lost three of the last four series on home turf while failing to win a single match. Earlier they had lost to Australia 1-0 in the summer of 2023 before England beat them 3-0 while the latest defeat was the worst.

The result also means Pakistan have won only one Test series on home turf since November 2006 with South Africa’s visit to the nation in 2021.
