IPL franchise Delhi Capitals parts ways with head coach Ricky Ponting with mutual consent

Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Delhi Capitals have parted ways with head coach Ricky Ponting with immediate effect on Saturday (July 13). Delhi Capitals, who finished sixth and missed out on a top-four finish in the IPL 2024, confirmed the news on Saturday penning an emotional note for the legendary figure. The franchise, however, hasn't announced a replacement for Ponting with the next season still 10 months away.

Ponting parts way with Delhi Capitals

"As you move on as our head coach, we're finding it incredibly hard to put this down in words," DC said in a post on social media.

"The four things you told us about in every huddle - care, commitment, attitude and effort - they sum up our seven summers together. Seven summers of you being hands-on, but also hands-off, so that we could become better."

“As athletes, yes, but more importantly, as human beings. Seven summers of you reaching every training session first, and leaving last. Seven summers of you sprinting out of the dugout during strategic timeouts, and biting your nails off until there were none left."

"Seven summers of your dressing room speeches - the speeches, Oh! (Separate post for that loading) Seven summers of your hugs, shoulder pats and fist pumps for us all - newcomer, superstar... and everyone in-between. Thank you for everything, Coach! Like, you often close out, 'Let's leave this here mate, grab a beer, get back to work tomorrow, yeah?'"

Ponting’s departure marks the end of an era for Delhi Capitals who peaked under the Australian coach during the IPL 2020 when they reached the final before losing to Mumbai Indians. Despite being a popular figure in the camp, Ponting could not help DC win the IPL and had an empty trophy cabinet. While nothing is yet clear on the next head coach, DC will have months to contemplate before stepping into the mega auctions.

DC to have major changes before Mega Auctions

Before the next season, IPL will have its mega auctions with DC planning a huge overhaul, including the futures of a few players who could be released. The franchise has largely been unsuccessful in reaching the Playoff during Ponting’s reign. However, reports suggest DC will opt to stay with Pravin Amre who will continue to serve the side while Sourav Ganguly will also continue with the franchise.
