India's Shreyas Iyer makes statement with back-to-back hundreds in Ranji Trophy before IPL mega auctions

India’s Shreyas Iyer has made a statement with back-to-back hundreds in the ongoing Ranji Trophy as he prepares to put behind the recent disappointment. Iyer, despite leading Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to victory in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) season, was not retained and was also dropped from the Indian side for the Australia tour. However, with an unbeaten hundred on Day 1 of the Ranji Trophy contest against Odisha, he has again attracted the attention of selectors.

Iyer scores hundred

Playing for Mumbai, Iyer came out to bat when Angkrish Raghuvanshi (92) and skipper Ajinkya Rahane (0) were dismissed on consecutive balls by Biplab Samantray in the 41st over. With the score at154/3, Iyer and Siddhesh Lad made sure there was no more batting collapse, ensuring Mumbai are in a strong position at Stumps on Day 1. Lad is unbeaten on 116, while Iyer scored 152 with a strike rate of above 90 to help Mumbai end the day on 385/3 in 90 overs.

Both Iyer and Lad have stitched an unbeaten stand of 231 runs as they look to stretch Mumbai’s dominance on Day 2.

Iyer makes statement

While Iyer’s batting dominance was the feature of the day, he made a huge statement at the end of 2024, having experienced ups and downs. He was first dropped from the central contract of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) but then helped KKR win the IPL. He was called back into the Indian side for the Sri Lanka tour but was not part of the Test side.

Another shock came on October 31 when he was released by KKR on the retention deadline day, meaning he will enter the auctions. The mega auctions will take place on November 24 and 25 in Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah, with Iyer having set a base price of INR 20 million.
