ENG vs WI, 1st Test: Gus Atkinson creates history with seven-for on debut for England - WATCH

England pacer Gus Atkinson.

England's Gus Atkinson created history by taking a seven-for in his debut Test innings. Atkinson reached the milestone in the first Test against West Indies which started on Wednesday (Jul 10).

Atkinson finished with figures of 7/45, the second best for England on debut. He missed the best debut innings bowling figures record by just two runs. The record of best bowling figures on debut for England stands with Dominic Cork, who took 7/43, also against West Indies at Lord's back in 1995.

Atkinson also took three wickets in an over during his spell, becoming the fist England bowler to do so in a decade. The last England bowler to take three wickets in an over was Ben Stokes, in 2014, against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). Watch his wickets here:

Apart from Atkinson, Chris Woakes, James Anderson and Ben Stokes took wicket each. Thanks to an extraordinary bowling performance, West Indies were bowled out for a paltry 121 in their first innings.

Debutant Mikyle Louis top scored for West Indies with 27 while Kavem Hodge chipped in with 24 and Alick Athanaze hit 23. West Indies were in state of repair with 44-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Athanaze and Hodge before going from 88/3 to 88/7.

Three of those four wickets were claimed by Atkinson in the same over while one was taken by Woakes.

England replied strongly in their first innings thanks to a blazing fifty by Zak Crawley. After Ben Duckett fell for a team score of 29, Crawley and Ollie Pope (57) added 94 runs for the second wicket.

After Pope was dismissed on the team score of 123, Jayden Seales dismissed England skipper Ben Stokes 30 runs later to give an opening to West Indies.
