IPL 2024, CSK vs GT, Highlights: CSK continue winning run under Ruturaj Gaikwad with of back-to-back wins

CSK have won back-to-back matches in the IPL 2024 as they have set pace at the start of the season. The win is second consecutive under the captaincy of Ruturaj Gaikwad and they have beaten GT in a repeat of last season's final. 

CSK win by 63 runs

GT have lost Sai Sudharsan as they hopes of an unlikely win at Chepauk take another dent.

Score: 114/5 in 15 Overs

GT have reached 100 on the board at struggling pace.

Score: 103/4 in 13 Overs

It is not the best time for GT fans as they have lost three wickets and still need 140 runs to win in 11 overs.

Score: 80/3 in 10 Overs

Shubman Gill is followed by Wriddhiman Saha in the pavilion as GT lose another wicket in the powerplay.

Score: 43/2 in 6 Overs

Shubman Gill is out and has to depart as the visitors are dealt with an unwanted blow early their innings.

Rachin Ravindra: Pretty cool wicket to bat on. The new ball skidded on nicely as well. Was just trying to show some intent. Rutu is very good to bat with, very calm head and keeps me in the game. Wickets in India are pretty good, so about seeing the ball and reacting.

(On his role) I think, as a player, you always want to take down the powerplay. Lucky enough that the balls were pitched in my areas and the wickets were good. He (Devon Conway) is so consistent, and if I do the stuff he does, I will be in a good space. (On the score) Slightly above par I think. But there is a bit of dew, hopefully we do our roles well.

CSK finish the stipulated quota of 20 overs with 206/6 on board. The Chepauk crowd has been treated to a stellar batting performance from the home team. GT will need to bat their socks off against CSK bowlers to chase this down. 
 

Fuller length ball on middle and off. Rizvi gets inside the line and times it well but doesn't get the elevation and gifts a straight forward catch to Miller stationed at long on.

Despite Dube departing in the last over, Sameer Rizvi scored 14 runs against Rashid Khan. CSK on course to an above 200 total.

Length ball pushed away from the batter by the leg-spinner. Dube attempts to hoick the ball out of the park but miscues it and holes out to Vijay Shankar at midwicket.

Shubman Gill has summoned Rashid Khan to bowl the penultimate over and stop the CSK juggernaut that has been marching rapidly. Dube has completed his fifty and would look to cut loose.

After Dube, Mitchell has also joined the party as CSK aim to reach anywhere near 200. Moreover, it might just be the platform needed to introduce MS Dhoni in front of the Chepauk.

CSK enter the death overs with the momentum by their side. Dube hasa been smashing them like anything while Daryl Mitchell waits for his opportunity to explode. Ominous signs for GT.

Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad departs! A back of length delivery pushed across from the batter. Gaikwad, on his toes, attempts to swipe the ball across to midwicket but gets a faint inside edge that is snaffled up by Saha behind.

Shivam Dube, pushed up the batting order, started the innings by smashing two sixes. CSK have certainly unlocked the powerful left-hander.

Tossed ball delivered wide outside off. Rahane, who had been struggling at the crease, danced down the track to go over cover but missed the ball by a countrymile. The keeper collects the ball and whips the bails off in a flash to send him back to the pavilion.

CSK appear to be firmly ahead in the game at the halfway stage. The ball has been coming nicely on the bat and CSK batters have punished the GT bowlers whenever they have erred in length.

At the end of 8 overs, CSK are 84/1, with Rahane and Gaikwad rebuilding the innings, following the dismissal of Ravindra. 

Powerplay overs completed and safe to say, it has completely belonged to the home team. Rachin Ravindra raced out of the blocks and took GT by surprise.

Rachin Ravindra falls after taking CSK to a brilliant start. He was timing the ball very well and even attacked Rashid Khan in his first ball before being stumped out in an unfortunate manner. CSK 62/1 in 5.2 overs as the NZ batter walks back for a 20-ball 46. 

Rachin starts well amid GT's poor fielding. Umesh Yadav bowled from the other end and didn't get his line and lengths right as Rachin is off to a promising start. On the last ball, there was an edge once again, this time off the NZ batter, but it fell short. CSK 13/0 (2).

PHEW! Edged and dropped at first slip, by Sai Kishore, as CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad gets an early lifeline. Good start by pacer Azmatullah Omarzai. CSK 2/0 (1).

Talking to the broadcasters, right before the toss, GT keeper Saha said, "Playing any format for 17 years continuously is definitely tough, but I have always tried to stay fit. That has been my simple logic. I work on my fitness during the off-time. Also recovery is important. With age catching up, just trying to follow a similar routine. Playing IPL to IPL is not that easy, it's high intensity. So I try to play every format in domestic cricket, also try to play club games. I like the atmosphere here, it's outstanding."

Ruturaj Gaikwad: We were looking to bowl first, wicket is hard and looks similar to the first game. It was a rusty start (against RCB) but we came back well. Everyone showed good intent throughout the innings. Our Malinga, Pathirana comes in for Theekshana.

Shubman Gill: We will bowl first. That (against MI) match was physical and mentally exhausting. Everyone is well rested and well settled with 10 teams playing. We get enough rest time between matches. It shows the character of the team, the way our bowlers bounced back against Mumbai. Playing with the same team.

Talking to the broadcasters, the NZ batter said, "Was nice to play the first game in front of a full crowd, always an amazing experience. Coming from NZ and experiencing something like this (crowd support) is really special. They (Gujarat) know how to win, so we need to make sure what we can control, need to do our job as a team and walk away with a win. He (Ruturaj) is a good man, a world-class batter, he is pretty cool, calm and collective like MS. I played the last game here and a couple of games during the (2023) World Cup a few months ago. The characteristics of the pitch are very similar to what we are used to with CSK and I am sure it will continue."

Matheesha Pathirana is back and has joined the CSK camp ahead of the GT tie. Stephen Fleming has confirmed that he is available for selection and, hence, it will be interesting to see who will make way for the SL pacer? Will it be Bangladesh speedster Mustafizur, who played in his place during the RCB clash?

Will CSK drop Fizz despite his match-winning spell versus Bengaluru? Or, will someone else make way for Pathirana? Interesting times.
