OpenAI appoints Sarah Friar as first CFO amid leadership reshuffle

OpenAI announced on Monday that Sarah Friar, the former CEO of social media giant Nextdoor, has been named its first chief financial officer. Kevin Weil, a seasoned technology executive, has also been named chief product officer by the artificial intelligence business.
Strategic appointments to drive growth
OpenAI, a renowned artificial intelligence company, has expanded its executive team with the additions of Sarah Friar and Kevin Weil. Friar, who has previously served as CFO at Square and a board member at Walmart, will now oversee OpenAI's financial strategy. Weil, who has previously worked for Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, will supervise product development.
"Sarah and Kevin bring a depth of experience that will enable OpenAI to scale our operations, set a strategy for the next phase of growth, and ensure that our teams have the resources they need to continue to thrive," said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, in a statement.
Leadership changes follow Sutskever's departure
These appointments follow substantial leadership changes at OpenAI. Ilya Sutskever, co-founder, and chief scientist, left in May and was replaced by Jakub Pachocki, who previously commanded the research division and oversaw the development of important projects such as GPT-4 and OpenAI Five. Sutskever's departure follows his controversial involvement in the dismissal and rehiring of CEO Sam Altman last November, which was quickly reversed due to employee outcry.
A seasoned team to navigate future challenges
Friar's significant experience in financial management and planning will be critical for OpenAI as it grows. Her experience at Goldman Sachs, McKinsey, and Salesforce complements her impressive portfolio. Weil's experience in product management at large social media firms qualifies him to lead innovation at OpenAI.
Strengthening the board of directors
Earlier this year, OpenAI expanded its board of directors to include influential figures such as Sue Desmond-Hellmann, former CEO of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Nicole Seligman, former president of Sony Entertainment, and Fidji Simo, CEO of Instacart. These appointments demonstrate OpenAI's commitment to effective governance and strategic oversight.
