Following a fire over the weekend, production at a Tata Electronics plant in Tamil Nadu that produces parts for Apple iPhones will be permanently paused, according to officials, according to Reuters.
The fire injured ten individuals with minor injuries and stopped output. This would damage Apple's iPhone supply chain in India just as the tech giant is attempting to diversify beyond China and sees India as a vital development area.
According to Tata, the cause of the incident is being looked into, and the plant's emergency procedures guarantee the safety of its workers. According to the report, officials have had difficulty conducting inspections because of the massive damage, and rescue crews are still working to clear debris.
According to Velu, a district fire officer, “We have stationed fire engines at the plant as there are chances of a follow-up fire incident or smoke coming off when the sheds that had fallen during the accident are removed. We have not yet ascertained the cause of the fire."
The Tamil Nadu plant produces essential back panels and a few other parts for iPhones, and before the year is out, another structure in the same complex is expected to begin assembly of iPhones.
