In response to the recent death of 26-year-old Chartered Accountant Anna Sebastian Perayil, Ernst & Young India has made a commitment to improve its workplace policies. EY has expressed deep sorrow over Perayil's passing and is taking the family's concerns seriously.

EY said in a statement, ‘Anna was a part of the Audit team at S R Batliboi, a member firm of EY Global, in Pune for a brief period of four months, joining the firm on 18 March 2024. That her promising career was cut short in this tragic manner is an irreparable loss for all of us.’

The company added, ‘While no measure can compensate for the loss experienced by the family, we have provided all the assistance as we always do in such times of distress and will continue to do so.’

This comes after the mother of the deceased young woman sent a letter to EY, flagging the ‘glorification’ of overwork at the multinational consulting firm as the main reason for her daughter’s death. The letter sparked outrage across social media over toxic work culture and its ill-effects. The Indian government has initiated a probe into the 'excessive workload' claims.

The case has also sparked a broader discussion on workplace stress and the pressures faced by employees in high-demand industries. Data shows that corporate overwork can lead to severe health issues, including anxiety and burnout. EY’s response includes a pledge to reassess and improve their work culture to prevent similar incidents in the future. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on understanding how to balance high-performance expectations with employee health and well-being.
