Deutsche Bank has announced the acquisition of a €1.67 billion ($1.79 billion) aviation loan portfolio from lender NordLB, indicating a significant expansion of its aviation financing branch. The financial terms of the sale have not been disclosed.

In a competitive bidding process, Deutsche Bank triumphed over many domestic and foreign competitors. NordLB confirmed the outcome on Monday, noting that the portfolio sale is consistent with its strategic intention to exit the aviation credit market.

The acquired loans, secured by commercial passenger aircraft, are held by a variety of lessors and airlines. Deutsche Bank will gradually transfer these loans starting in late June, integrating them into its existing portfolio.

NordLB, which has a remaining aviation loan portfolio worth €1.1 billion ($1.18 billion), has been actively lowering its exposure to the sector as part of a larger restructuring strategy. The bank's move to exit a significant amount of its aviation finance assets demonstrates its shift toward focusing on other core sectors.

Deutsche Bank, Germany's largest lender, sees the acquisition as a strategic move to strengthen its position in the aviation finance industry. The bank's investment demonstrates its belief in the sector's long-term prospects, despite recent industry problems.
