Wrong lane driving violations surge by 252 per cent in Delhi

The Delhi Traffic Police has reported a significant increase in enforcement actions against drivers violating lane discipline in the first half of 2024. According to official data, over 2,500 were claimed to be driving in the wrong lane during this period, marking a substantial rise in prosecutions compared to the previous year.

Statistics released by the traffic police reveal that 2,577 violators have been issued challans (traffic tickets) for incorrect lane usage in the current year. This figure stands in contrast to the 732 challans issued for the same offense throughout 2023, representing an impressive 252 per cent increase in enforcement actions.

A senior traffic police official emphasised that this intensified crackdown is part of a broader strategy to enhance road safety and alleviate traffic congestion in the nation's capital. The department has implemented more stringent measures to ensure motorists adhere to proper lane usage, recognising the critical role that lane discipline plays in maintaining smooth traffic flow and reducing accidents.

To achieve these goals, the Delhi Traffic Police has started its surveillance and enforcement capabilities across the city. Additional personnel have been deployed to monitor traffic patterns and identify offenders, demonstrating the department's commitment to addressing this issue comprehensively.

In conjunction with these enforcement efforts, the traffic police conducted a detailed analysis of the top 10 traffic circles where the highest number of challans were issued in 2024. This study aims to identify hotspots of traffic violations and inform targeted enforcement strategies.

The findings reveal that the IGI Airport circle leads with 572 challans, followed by Mayur Vihar circle with 344, and Madhu Vihar circle with 339. Other notable areas include Kamla Market (215 challans), Civil Lines (195), Narela (194), Kotwali (178), Timarpur (164), Kapashera (86), and Kalyanuri (59).

By pinpointing these high-violation areas, the traffic police can allocate resources more effectively and implement tailored strategies to improve compliance with traffic regulations. This data-driven approach underscores the department's commitment to enhancing road safety through targeted interventions.

The substantial increase in prosecution rates reflects the traffic police's dedication to enforcing traffic rules and promoting safer driving practices throughout Delhi.
