UAW balances auto industry wins and pro-Palestine activism amid internal tensions

The United Auto Workers (UAW) union has recently achieved significant victories for workers in the automotive industry, particularly in the electric vehicle (EV) sector. The union secured a landmark contract for EV battery workers at an Ohio plant, ensuring substantial wage increases and enhanced safety protections. This agreement is perceived as a pivotal step in President Biden's efforts to promote a green future while protecting workers' interests.

However, the UAW's success in the auto industry has been somewhat overshadowed by its activism on college campuses, where the union represents tens of thousands of university workers. The union's focus on ending Israel's war in Gaza has generated internal tensions, with some members expressing discomfort with the union's outward political stance on such a contentious issue.

The UAW's involvement in the Gaza conflict began when university union members pressed the national leadership to take action. In December, the union became the first major organisation to demand a cease-fire in Gaza, with unanimous support from its board. This decision has led to turmoil within some UAW locals in California and New York, where members have clashed over pro-Palestine resolutions.

Despite the internal discord, UAW leaders maintain that they can balance the union's dual thrusts of activism on college campuses and in red-state assembly lines. The union's president, Shawn Fain, has demonstrated a commitment to reconnecting with the working class and has delivered significant pay raises for autoworkers through strikes and negotiations.

The UAW's success in organising workers at foreign automakers, particularly in the union-hostile Southeast, is another notable achievement. However, the union has faced challenges, such as the recent vote against UAW representation at two Mercedes-Benz factories in Alabama and accusations of obstructing a court-appointed monitor's attempts to access information.

The tentative contract at Ultium Cells in Ohio, which includes substantial wage increases, bonuses, and new positions for health and safety workers, is intended to showcase the UAW's commitment to its members in the auto industry. However, the union's leadership must also address the concerns of pro-Palestinian activists, who have become a significant part of the UAW's membership due to the union's organising efforts in higher education.

While some critics argue that the union's stance on Gaza undermines its primary purpose of advocating for workers, UAW leaders defend their position, citing the union's history of activism on social and political issues. They stress the importance of giving workers a voice in both their working conditions and their engagement in campus protests.

As the UAW navigates the challenges of balancing its diverse membership's interests and its commitment to activism, it remains to be seen how the union will reconcile the tensions between its blue-collar successes and its pro-Palestinian stance. Nonetheless, the union's recent victories in the auto industry and its endorsement of President Biden's re-election demonstrate its continued influence in the labour movement and its dedication to representing the interests of the American working class.
