Pagani introduces custom Huayra Epitome with manual transmission

Pagani Automobili has recently unveiled the Huayra Epitome, a custom-built vehicle commissioned through its Grandi Complicazioni division. This unique model represents a departure from standard Huayra configurations, most notably in its inclusion of a manual transmission.

The Huayra Epitome project spanned 19 months, with nine months dedicated to concept development and ten months for design and engineering. Lorenzo Kerkoc from Grandi Complicazioni worked closely with the client throughout this process.

The Huayra Epitome incorporates technology from Pagani's upcoming Utopia model into the existing Huayra platform. This approach, which Pagani terms a "pull-forward," allows the company to introduce new engineering features in limited production runs.

A key feature of the Huayra Epitome is its Xtrac manual transmission, originally developed for the Utopia model. This marks the first time a Huayra has been equipped with a manual gearbox, as all previous versions used automated transmissions. The inclusion of a clutch pedal adds a level of driver engagement not present in other Huayra models.

The vehicle is powered by a 6-litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine, developed in collaboration with Mercedes-AMG. This engine, which bears Pagani's name on its cam covers, produces 864 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 811 lb-ft of torque between 2800 and 5900 rpm. The power delivery characteristics are reminiscent of sports car engines from the 1980s and early 1990s, with peak power achieved at relatively low rpm.

Pagani's decision to continue using a large-displacement V12 engine contrasts with industry trends towards electrification. However, the company acknowledges that gas-electric hybrids may be necessary in the future.

The Grandi Complicazioni division, responsible for the Huayra Epitome, is Pagani's equivalent to customisation departments at other luxury automakers. It offers both aesthetic modifications and the opportunity to incorporate new engineering features.

The name "Grandi Complicazioni" draws inspiration from the world of high-end watchmaking, reflecting the intricate and complex nature of Pagani's vehicles. This naming convention aligns with Pagani's approach of combining mechanical complexity with advanced materials and engineering.

Pagani's strategy with the Huayra Epitome represents a different path in the high-performance car segment. While many manufacturers are focusing on increased automation and digital interfaces, Pagani emphasises mechanical engagement and traditional driving experiences.

The Huayra Epitome showcases Pagani's ability to blend modern engineering with classic sports car elements. It offers a manual transmission, a large-displacement engine, and driver-focused design in an era when such features are becoming increasingly rare in high-performance vehicles.

This custom model demonstrates Pagani's commitment to low-volume, highly specialised production. The company typically produces around 50 cars per year, allowing for significant customisation and the integration of new technologies in limited runs.

The introduction of the Huayra Epitome highlights the ongoing demand for bespoke, driver-centric vehicles in the high-end automotive market.
