NHTSA concludes probe into GM's massive seat belt recall
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced on Wednesday that it has officially closed its engineering analysis into General Motors' extensive recall of over 1.3 million vehicles in the United States due to seat belt issues. The probe, which began in 2019, focused on GM's recall involving the detachment of flexible steel seat belt anchor cables on the outboard side of front seats.
Initially, the investigation was launched to address concerns about the integrity of the seat belt anchors in several GM models. The analysis was upgraded to a more detailed engineering review in 2020, encompassing vehicles from model years 2009 through 2014, including GMC Acadia, Buick Enclave, and Chevrolet Traverse SUVs.
The NHTSA's decision to close the probe was influenced by GM's proactive measures to address the issue. In 2019, GM expanded its special coverage program to include all recalled vehicles, offering component replacement for up to 12 years or 180,000 miles from the date of initial sale. This comprehensive coverage contributed to the NHTSA’s decision not to pursue a new recall.
The agency also noted that "there have been no reported crashes, injuries, or fatalities related to this investigation." Additionally, the NHTSA highlighted "the high detectability of the subject failure and the low rate of occurrence" as factors in concluding the probe.
This resolution marks a significant step for GM, affirming the company's commitment to addressing safety concerns while also alleviating potential regulatory pressures related to the recall.
