Maruti Suzuki India Limited has said that with its Manesar facility achieving a cumulative production of 1 crore units, the company has chalked up a significant achievement. Manesar is now the fastest Suzuki manufacturing plant in the world to achieve this target, doing so in just 18 years.
While thanking customers for their support, Maruti Suzuki India Managing Director and CEO Mr Hisashi Takeuchi acknowledged that employees, business associates and the Government of India had lent support. "It is another goal achieved through India's manufacturing and 'Make in India' initiative," he added.
In October 2006, the Manesar facility of close to 600 acres started operations and has been instrumental in localising production. The plant manufactures the popular Brezza, Ertiga, XL6, Ciaz, Dzire, Wagon R, S-Presso, and Celerio models and is focused on manufacturing both the domestic and export markets, including Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and neighboring Asian countries. Notably, the facility was where Maruti Suzuki’s first passenger car produced and exported outside of India, the Baleno, came off the line.
Maruti Suzuki has manufactured over 3.11 crore vehicles since it started operation and has an annual production capacity of about 2.35 million units. The supply chain in India has been established. The components of a huge supply chain that are local to India. Thus, the strategy has given rise to direct and indirect employment to millions and made the company a leading player in making the Indian automotive industry self reliant and competitive on global scale.
