Mahindra and Skoda set to sign pact for proposed joint venture

Mahindra Logistics

Senior leadership from Mahindra & Mahindra and Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVWIPL) are expected to convene in Mumbai in the coming days to explore the possibility of establishing a collaborative car manufacturing venture in India, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

An individual familiar with the matter stated, "Members of the board from both SAVWIPL and M&M have plans to meet within the next few days." This source indicated that discussions are progressing favorably, and the upcoming meetings are likely to focus on crucial aspects such as product lines, strategies for vehicle platforms, and the selection of manufacturing facilities that would be utilized by the proposed joint venture.

The potential partnership would not encompass the current lineup of sedans and SUVs marketed by Volkswagen and Skoda in India, nor would it include the luxury brands Audi, Porsche, and Lamborghini, as per the source's information.

A previously published report revealed that Mahindra & Mahindra and Volkswagen Group's wholly-owned Indian subsidiary were in advanced stages of negotiations to form an equal joint venture. The primary objectives of this collaboration would be to share costs, technology, and vehicle platforms for future product development.

Klaus Zellmer, who holds the position of chairman of the board at Skoda Auto, is also present in Mumbai and will be leading the negotiations on behalf of SAVWIPL.

Sources close to the matter suggest that these discussions are expected to culminate in the two automotive giants signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the planned joint venture. This significant step could occur as early as the end of October or the beginning of November.

When approached for comment on these developments, spokespersons representing both SAVWIPL and Mahindra & Mahindra declined to provide any statements, maintaining a stance of discretion as the talks continue.

This potential collaboration between two major players in the automotive industry could have significant implications for the Indian market, potentially leading to innovative product offerings and enhanced competitiveness in the rapidly evolving automotive landscape of India.
