As electric vehicles gain momentum globally, Honda is set to introduce its highly anticipated electric N-VAN e in Japan this October. This new addition is part of Honda's aggressive strategy to expand its electric vehicle portfolio and meet growing demand for sustainable transportation.
Honda has priced the new N-VAN e starting at USD 15,500 (2,439,800 yen), making it an attractive option for both commercial and personal use. This competitive pricing is a strategic move to ramp up EV sales and position Honda as a leader in the electric vehicle market.
Why the N-VAN e?
The electric N-VAN e is based on Honda's gas-powered N-VAN, which has been a staple in the market. Honda first teased this electric model in 2022, and a prototype was showcased at the Japan Mobility Show last October. After extensive domestic testing over the past year, Honda is ready to launch the N-VAN e on October 10, 2024.
Impressive range and charging capabilities
One of the key highlights of the N-VAN e is its range and charging efficiency. The vehicle offers up to 152 miles (245 km) of WLTC range, which is sufficient for delivery services and other commercial uses. The N-VAN e supports 30-minute fast charging, making it convenient for businesses that require quick turnaround times. Additionally, a regular 6 kW charge takes approximately 4.5 hours.
Design and features
Honda has designed the N-VAN e with enhanced features and accessibility compared to its gas-powered counterpart. The electric model boasts a flat, low floor and high ceiling, with the battery mounted under the floor. By eliminating the center pillar, Honda has created a large opening on the passenger side, facilitating easy access and loading.
Four variants
The N-VAN e comes in four variants, each catering to different customer needs:
e: L4: The standard model with four seats, a 7" LCD screen, and designed for diverse uses.
e: FUN: Based on the e: L4, this variant includes features for leisure activities, such as fast charging and LED headlights.
e: G: Designed for commercial use, this model has one seat and is ideal for deliveries. It is longer and has a lower floor height than the gas-powered version.
e: L2: This model offers multiple configurations, with seats and the center pillar removed for easy loading and unloading.
The e: G and e: L2 models will be available exclusively through Honda's Fleet Sales Division and the Honda ON leasing program.
Honda's long-term EV strategy
Despite some rivals scaling back on their EV plans, Honda is committed to accelerating its electric vehicle initiatives. The company has announced a $65 billion (10 trillion yen) investment through 2030 to strengthen its EV lineup. This ambitious plan includes the launch of seven new "0 series" EV models globally by 2030. The first model, based on the Honda Saloon concept, will debut in North America before its worldwide rollout.
Expanding EV presence
Following the launch of the N-VAN e in Japan, Honda plans to introduce a series of small-size EVs in the region to cater to the increasing demand. In the United States, Honda's first electric SUV, the Prologue, is already available. With a new $2,000 incentive, the Honda Prologue is now more affordable to lease than Tesla's Model Y, starting at $399 per month.
Honda's introduction of the electric N-VAN e marks a significant step in the company's journey towards a sustainable future. By offering a competitively priced, versatile, and efficient electric vehicle, Honda is poised to capture a substantial share of the EV market. This move aligns with Honda's broader strategy to lead the charge in electric mobility and meet the evolving needs of consumers and businesses alike.
As Honda continues to innovate and expand its electric vehicle offerings, the N-VAN e represents a critical milestone in its commitment to sustainability and technological advancement. With its launch just around the corner, the N-VAN e is set to make a significant impact in the electric vehicle landscape.
