Ford issues recall for 85,000 explorer SUVs over engine fire risk

Ford Motor Company is recalling approximately 85,000 Explorer SUVs equipped with the Police Interceptor Utility package due to a potential risk of engine fires, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The recall affects vehicles from the 2020 to 2022 model years that have either 3.3L hybrid or gas engines.

The NHTSA revealed on Friday that the recall stems from concerns about engine failures that could lead to dangerous fires. Specifically, if an engine failure occurs, engine oil and fuel might escape into the engine compartment and collect near ignition sources, such as the engine or exhaust components. This accumulation poses a fire hazard, increasing the risk of an engine compartment blaze.

Ford’s recall encompasses SUVs outfitted with the Police Interceptor Utility package, a specialised version of the Explorer tailored for law enforcement use. The company is expected to notify affected owners, who will then be instructed to take their vehicles to authorised dealers for inspection and repair.

Owners of the recalled vehicles are advised to remain vigilant for any signs of engine issues or unusual odors and to follow any interim safety recommendations provided by Ford. The automaker has not yet disclosed how it plans to address the potential fire hazard or how long the recall process will take.

The NHTSA's alert underscores the importance of addressing safety issues promptly to prevent potential accidents and injuries. As the recall progresses, Ford will work to ensure that all affected vehicles are properly serviced to mitigate any fire risks associated with engine failures.
