Finland sits out EU vote on China EV tariffs

The European Commission, the executive branch of the EU, is considering imposing provisional tariffs of up to 37.6% on EVs imported from China. This move, the EU's largest trade case to date, has heightened tensions with Beijing. The tariffs are intended to counter what the Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, has called a "flood" of cheap EVs allegedly produced with the help of Chinese government subsidies.

According to an official at the Finnish embassy to the EU, Finland's abstention stems from uncertainty surrounding the tariffs. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, expressed concern about the impact on markets and the potential conflict with the interests of some European car manufacturers. They noted that not all European automakers believe the tariffs are in their best interests.

This initial vote is non-binding and serves as an advisory measure. A subsequent final vote will determine the fate of the Commission's tariff proposal. Unless a qualified majority opposes the proposal, it will be adopted.

Finland's abstention highlights the complexities surrounding the proposed tariffs. While the EU seeks to address concerns over unfair competition from subsidised Chinese EVs, the potential for disruption to markets and the interests of some European businesses raise questions about the effectiveness of the proposed solution.
