Elon Musk refutes report of revenue-sharing talks between xAI and Tesla

Elon Musk has described the report that his artificial intelligence start up xAI has been in talks with Tesla to be paid a proportion of the electric car maker’s potential future revenues in return for use of the company’s technology. The report by The Wall Street Journal published on Saturday said that Tesla isolating xAI’s AI models to bolster driver assistance and FSD systems, and could offer the firm a part of the returned income.

Musk dismissed the report on the same on his social media platform X on late Saturday asserting it was not true. He said in a conversation, “Tesla has had numerous technical discussions with the engineers at xAI that have been beneficial in its journey of achieving the unsupervised FSD, but Tesla has no requirement to license any technology from xAI." When asked, Musk dismissed the report saying that that was not accurate.

Such tasks could include the creation of a voice assistant in cars or software in the Tesla humanoid robot, Optimus, according to the information from unnamed sources quoted by the Journal earlier this month. From the arrangement described to investors, the revenue-sharing formula would depend with the extent of integration of xAI’s technology and innovations in Tesla.

Founded in the last year, xAI was established by Musk to compete with the Microsoft funded OpenAI. It has created have emerged various questions as to whether resources are going to be shared between Musk’s companies. Specifically, Musk has previously signaled that xAI could have a part to play in helping Tesla’s FSD to progress and/or to be used in a brand new Tesla data center. He also saw possibilities of Grok xAI’s chatbot, integrating it with Tesla’s software.

In July, the news came out that Musk discussed with Tesla board a possible USD 5 billion investment in xAI, that also enkindled debates on connection between them.
