China has once again invoked its willingness to engage in dialogue with the European Commission as the parties continue to spar over duties on EVs. This comes at a time when possible punitive tariffs for China made cars maybe in the offing have been proposed. On Monday, China told the European Commission that it was willing to enter talks, said Li Fei, vice director of commerce. Recently, the Ministry of Commerce claimed that China is ready to initiate talks with any country with the intention of solving some of the economic and trade tensions that are prevalent at the moment.
This new attempt at negotiations comes after a report by Reuters, which suggested that the EU is set to decrease its standard end tariffs for Tesla cars and decrease tariffs on other Chinese-made EVs. The EU’s contemplation to undertake the tariff changes shows that efforts are underway to try and deal with the issue of countervailing subsidies that has been a challenge when it comes to negotiations with China on electric vehicle exports.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce admitted the problems associated with the subsidies but stated the optimisms of the positive outcome for beneficial cooperation. There is factually more to be done in terms of policy-making and this is an area where ‘China is ready to continue cooperating with the European side to achieve a solution favorable to both parties and compliant with the WTO norms,’ the Ministry stated. This approach is intended for positive and sustainable representation on the Chinese and EU economic and trade interactions.
This new approach by China to negotiate is part of a long-term plan in a bid to avoid facing new duties on EVs again. China also showed its desire to bring down the trade barriers by not levying provisional anti-dumping duties on the brandy imported from EU in the last week.
Under the current trade policy and facing increasing pressure from the US, the EU is planning to add more taxation to Chinese-made electric cars to set up 10% of import tariffs. The result of this vote will be calculate and it will determine and forecast the future tendencies in the relations between China and EU of the automobile industry.
