Students and educators celebrate the birth anniversary of the second President of India, Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was also a scholar, a philosopher, and an exemplary teacher, on September 5 every year as Teachers’ Day.
Countries that celebrate Teachers’ Day:
National Teacher Day in the US is observed on the Tuesday of the first full week of May. The whole week is celebrated as Teacher Appreciation Week when students show gratitude and appreciation for teachers.
In China, Teachers’ Day is celebrated on September 10 every year. The date was chosen as it is the anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Teachers’ Association.
Teachers’ Day is celebrated in Russia on October 5, which also coincides with World Teachers’ Day established by UNESCO in 1994.
In Singapore, Teachers’ Day is celebrated on September 1, and on this day, students participate in festive events, performances, and activities to honour and entertain their teachers.
May 2 is celebrated as Teachers’ Day in Iran to commemorate the assassination of Iranian professor Ayatollah Morteza Motahhari in 1980.
