Record Nobel Haul for Women in 2023

Why is 2023 a bumper year for women?

2023 has been a bumper year for women in the Nobel Prize season, because two of the winners did not share the prize with anyone else, meaning that for the first time almost half (47%) of the Nobel Prizes went to women. Previously, the highest proportion was just over two fifths (42%) in 2009 and 2004.

Claudia Goldin

Goldin, the latest Nobel Prize winner, won the prestigious prize in Economics. She is the first woman to have won the economics prize on her own.

Anne L'Huillier

Franco-Swedish scientist Anne L'Huillier is one of the three winners of the physics prize. She shares the award with Pierre Agostini, and Ferenc Krausz.

Katalin Kariko

Kariko, a Hungarian-American biochemist, won the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. She was jointly awarded along with Drew Weissman.

Narges Mohammadi
