Chikungunya, the mosquito-borne disease, has affected over 3.4 million people in 43 countries. There is currently no specific drug to treat Chikungunya.
Chikungunya is spread by the bites of infected female Aedes mosquitoes and causes fever, severe joint pain, muscle pain, headache, nausea, fatigue and rash.
The disease has been described as an "emerging global health threat" by the US FDA. Now in a massive breakthrough, the world's first Chikungunya vaccine has been approved.
The vaccine named Ixchiq has been approved for those aged 18 and above.
According to the US FDA, individuals at high risk of contracting the disease can be given the single-shot vaccine. It was developed by Europe's Valneva.
