The annual average temperature was already at a record high in 2023, and scientists have predicted an even hotter one in 2024. As the Earth's oceans were record-warm for most of 2023, it would take as many months for them to release that heat, making 2024 hotter.
As per climate scientists, the planet-warming El Niño climate pattern is nearing its peak, and the last time that happened, it pushed the Earth to record warmth in 2016. Hence, there will be no slowdown in the surge of global warming.
The current El Niño, which began in June, is considered strong and could peak more than the El Nino that started in early 2015. If this holds true then the first half of 2024 will be warmer than the ones in 2016.
