6 Cat Infections That Can Get to Humans

1. Ringworm

Feline ringworms, which include circular areas of hair loss and scaling of skin, can infect humans leading to scaly, red, and ring-shaped patches on the skin.

2. Salmonella

Salmonella infections, of which cats may not show any symptoms, can spread to humans, leading to fevers, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhoea.

3. Toxoplasmosis

A parasitic infection, Toxoplasmosis can spread to humans resulting in flu-like feeling, swollen glands, long-term blurry vision, or eye pain. Cats become prone to it by feeding on infected rodents.

4. Q fever

Q fever can lead to high fevers, severe headaches, abdominal pain, and body aches. If it gets serious, it can cause pneumonia or heart valve infections. The bacteria that causes it is inhaled and spreads when an infected mother cat gives birth.

5. Influenza

Reports say there is a tiny chance that you can get flu from the cat. One Ohio study revealed that 62% of 400 tested domestic cats showed signs of past flu.

6. Toxocara

Cat poo in the soil can lead to the release of Toxocara worm eggs (Toxocara cati). These larvae may penetrate under the skin, leaving you with inflammation, itching, and pain.
