Widowed twice, at first glance, Belle Gunness seems haunted by tragedies. A Norwegian immigrant in La Porte, Indiana, in the 1900s she murdered as many as 40 people including her husbands, her foster daughter and many men she would attract by posting lonely-heart ads in newspapers.
She worked at a "baby farm" and reportedly killed hundreds of infants and children. The exact number is unknown, but it is suspected that she murdered over 400. For her crimes, she was hanged in 1896.
